Date: 2023-09-08 12:32 am (UTC)ah, *you*. so you want advice now? whatever regarding?
as for Ryou and I, sure, after a fashion. we consider ourselves family, and the body I inhabit is a duplicate of his; that close enough for you?
[ He'll explain himself if Javert bothers to press - the Bakurae "it's complicated" relationship status is hardly a secret; but he's feeling enough impatience that he doesn't immediately feel like volunteering the full story. ]
<PasUnPolicier>
Date: 2023-09-08 01:01 pm (UTC)Regarding Bakura, of course. You are close to one another, I take it. Very well, let it be so. I will cut to the finish.
Would you be willing to come and speak off-network, in the flesh, in a cordial capacity? Let us call it tea time. Don't waste my minutes if the answer is no.
<GODKING> -> action
Date: 2023-09-08 10:54 pm (UTC)The Ring-Spirit has to really think about this one. He'd rather not have some kind of social visit with Javert of all people, but... could this potentially end up helping Ryou in some way? Hm. Hrrrmmm. ...Well, he'll never know if he refuses upfront. Accepting an invitation doesn't prevent him from a rude exit should he find the visit lacking in value. ]
For Ryou's sake I'll give it a shot. I'll meet you at your Dyster place then, I already know where it is. I'm assuming this can't be over the network due to eavesdropping little boys?
[ Rather than waiting on a reply, the Ring-Spirit directly heads over to Dyster and the gloomy mansion he knows to be Javert's.
There seem to be Dysterites cleaning up some sort of mess of broken bottles outside one of the windows. ...Huh. He doesn't ask them what that's all about, but does ask one for a leg-up and ducks carefully in through said window.
And if Javert's not already present, he'll arrive to find the Ring-Spirit already waiting patiently in an arm chair, long bird-legs crossed at the knee, spidery metal-taloned fingers knit into a little shelf supporting his chin. If Javert is present, the Ring-Spirit simply seats himself as described, before any invitation. ]

Date: 2023-09-09 03:08 pm (UTC)Not enough of a hurry, apparently. Because when the door opens to his own sitting parlor from the prison, the harpy has already made himself at home in a lounging chair. He pauses in a half-step, brow raised, and meets the 'intruder' evenly in the eye. The corner of his mouth flicks upward, an unsettling cross between a bitter smile and a grimace.]
And here you are. Well then! All of you trundling about are making a hell of a case for added security measures on this home.
[Just an idle remark. He's unlikely to do anything concrete but ensure his most private journals and files remain private, in spite of the comings and goings of his Fog-aligned allies.
Javert purses his lips and hangs his cap on the coat hook mounted on the wall. If Ring-Spirit has never beheld Javert in person before, he does move and glide about with a considerable looming presence, regardless of his comparative height to anyone else in the room. He arrests the attention, he sticks out in a crowd; he's thoroughly as bleak and unsettling to behold as any less man-shaped monster, with his deathly pallor and countless scars, the most prominent of which splash across both cheeks and jaws and tuck into the gnarled mess hidden beneath his stiff collar.
He smooths the skirts of his frock coat and asks blandly,]
Coffee or tea? Or something richer, 'Richard'? There are steaks for the dog in the ice-box. Little else, I am afraid.
apologies for the long delay,,
Date: 2023-09-14 03:45 am (UTC)"Added"? There are security measures?
[ He suspects "I locked the door" is being counted like it matters.
Ah well. While he's a little tempted by the mention of steaks, the last thing he wants is to give Javert some reason to associate him with a dog, so he just shrugs lightly. ]
Tea works, if you insist on something - or we could get straight to the point.

Date: 2023-09-14 02:18 pm (UTC)[Oh, good. Javert would rather skip the pleasantries, too, but he has dedicated himself to making a concerted effort with the people he'd like to collaborate. He stands, poised with his palm flat upon his coat, and considers where to start, unmoving.
He settles on the phantom elephant filling the room.]
You are aware I have attempted to patch up the matters between Monsieur Bakura and myself?
no subject
Date: 2023-09-15 07:50 am (UTC)No, I wasn't aware - last I'd heard, you managed to make things worse.
[ There is relatively little judgment in his tone. As far as he's concerned, right now he's just being bluntly direct. ]
no subject
Date: 2023-09-15 06:01 pm (UTC)I have personally attempted outreach to him, on multiple occasions. [Javert follows up dryly, a melancholy smile at his lip,] It was poorly-received. As you imagine.
I want to reach an understanding between us, and you, as well.
You recognize that Madame Fog is too thin for comfort, don't you? Ever since last autumn, after the War. [He sneers ferociously when he spits out the word war. He won't mince his feelings about it.] Her dedicated servants cannot continue as we are, in our separate corners, yanking Her power from one end to another, leaving Elias the advantage. We must learn to cooperate... and coordinate.
To earn back what is hers.
no subject
Date: 2023-09-16 02:35 am (UTC)Mn. Many of us dislike each others' methods and reasoning, but the Fog could definitely use us getting our acts together. You have something specific in mind? Or do you just want advising on how to hold a constructive conversation with Ryou?
[ He's willing to help in either or both cases, though he's not sure yet if Javert will find his advice on the latter tolerable. ]
no subject
Date: 2023-09-16 01:19 pm (UTC)A pinch of both.
[He sidles, upright, into his seat, legs folded stiffly in front of him.]
There are certain projects underway with our colleagues that I know about, and I want to expand on them in secrecy. We must play Elias at his own game, you see. Weaken him and his accomplices in ways they may not recognize until it is too far gone to reverse the order, eh?
As for Bakura, well. [He gazes intently at 'Richard,' particularly his face, the only piece of him left which resembles Ryou Bakura strongly. The rest is all Harpy where Ryou is shadow and wolf.] He might find a word from you more palatable than anything else from my mouth. But I assure you, there are no hard feelings against him on my part. He is a smart fellow, a powerful fellow, and I want to count him in on these arrangements.
[He grins ruefully.]
To say it has been a frustrating experience convincing him to come around... I am a patient creature, but not so patient to halt operations and wait for him to pull his head up and toss out his fury at me.

Date: 2023-09-20 01:56 am (UTC)Hm, I might be able to better deliver information, yes - but so long as he knows it involves you, I suspect there'll be some reluctance to be included in anything. You see, it's less that he worries you harbor a grudge, and more that you directly mock everything he believes in whenever you two interact. You are aware that you antagonize him too, aren't you?
I can't say it's left the best impression on me, either. If you truly want to cooperate with either of us, that's something that needs to be addressed~
no subject
Date: 2023-09-20 03:14 am (UTC)[Pardon? Javert's lips peel back, revealing each of his glinting, lengthened canines. He opens his palms from their tight clasp, a listless gesture.
He looks genuinely mystified by the accusation.]
I don't get your meaning. I don't mock him.
I call him my colleague, and expect him to behave like one. What I urge from him is his best work, and to respect my service to the Fog the same as he demands respect from me. I give him my respect. If he is unwilling to give me his, fine. I accept that. At least shove it off long enough to tolerate working along the same lines in these battles.
no subject
Date: 2023-09-20 05:48 am (UTC)Oh? Have you forgotten already? Or is "laughing so hard you cry" something you genuinely think is ~respectful~?
[ He snorts, turning the questions rhetorical as he elaborates. ]
The heart is something we take very seriously where I'm from. While I can't say I'm surprised, I am... disappointed... that you're willing to discount its place merely because it's also a source of weakness. The heart is what makes you a person. Not being human doesn't make us objects, Warden.
Monsters remain people, however much you may wish otherwise.
no subject
Date: 2023-09-20 01:02 pm (UTC)His eyes hollow out to an icy, dead cold. He wasn't laughing at Ryou Bakura. That laughter was the laughter of a wounded soul, incredulous at how the pieces of his world came together to paint the same picture over and over, no matter how much he wishes to prove it will be different this time. A fool's errand.
He reminds himself to be as cordial as he can manage to his guest, and keeps his tone at a somber, steady sail.]
Monsters are people, you are right. Humans are cattle, and fickle enough to let their pulsing mounds of organ guide them. We are not our hearts, and mine hasn't hummed a single beat in an age, I tell you.
Make the distinction of using our heads over that heart, and do not sit here and tell me that the heart is the only quality which makes you a beast worthy of respect. I have long since discarded that notion.
no subject
Date: 2023-09-20 11:23 pm (UTC)So you're one of those who can only bear to feed on the people who ~aren't really people~ - that one does surprise me, although I suppose it shouldn't.
[ He quickly wipes his expression into something blanker, plainer; less darkly amused. He can't completely hide his continued distaste, but this is a serious conversation and he needs to act like he's taking it as seriously as he is. No cackling fits for now. ]
The heart is not what makes you someone worthy of respect - it's what makes you anyone at all. This artificial division between thought and feeling is something from long after my time, something better suited to an age of things that can think without feeling - which are computers, by the way. The other guy's shtick, remember~?
[ No, serious, he needs to sound serious, not like he's mocking Javert. Even if he'd dearly love to do so... no, try to make his point honestly first. An alliance would better serve the Fog, if there's any chance at all of them seeing eye to eye on this.
Inhale, exhale, grit his teeth and continue. ]
You may say you accept that monsters are all people, but what you clearly want is to be the Fog's tool, not be forced to remain your own person. She doesn't want tools. She doesn't value cold logic. Tch...
One of my first exposures to you was that little stunt you pulled where everyone fell prey to their own baser instincts - the one where the locals organized a monster circus. Do you still remember it? I believe it later came out they'd been given the use of some of your prison's special shackles...
[ He quickly holds up a long-fingered hand to forestall any potential quibbles about his referencing the incident; that specific incident isn't his point, it's merely meant to serve as the example. ]
Anyway - that little spate of madness was just one of many that have been supported by the Fog, no? And just what part of any of them do you think glorified the use of "head over heart"? From where I sit, it's always been about empowering the impulses of the heart.
The heart is what the Fog wants from us.

Date: 2023-09-21 12:14 am (UTC)Throughout the entire speech, he listened very carefully. He has been fully honest and forthright with Ring-Spirit about his spat with Bakura; that he had thought he had flown a white flag, allowed the man to kill him with the intent of dousing the most fervid of his hatred, and pave the way for a functional alliance afterwards. The fact that, at last, this harpy who behaves like he's somehow pulling one over Javert's head, has put into words exactly what Javert needed to understand what he was missing is incredible to him.
Incredible and terribly enlightening. A switch flicks in his head.]
Semantics! [he exclaims, a non-sequitur beside what came before. The granite facade crumbles, a tepid calm resumes its place. He is completely unbothered by Ring-Spirit's accusations that the Fog doesn't want what Javert has to offer; it is quite plain to him that She approves of his interpretation of Her will. He explains in a charged tone, realization smoothing his face,] The heart implies softness. That was the meaning I heard. What you are telling me is the same as our basest impulses. That is a different meaning altogether.
[Yes. All of this was flubbed up due to pedantry. Javert simply doesn't have a bone in him that could call his passions, his bloodlust and violence, heart.]
I am not soft. Monsters are not soft. We cannot be soft and quailing with our operations. Do you understand me?
Is this where Bakura has misunderstood? Unbelievable.
1/2
Date: 2023-09-21 06:08 am (UTC)That's what you heard? Softness? He gives his reason for killing you, follows through on that intent, and you think somehow the root cause is his gentleness. That...
[ He closes his eyes with a longsuffering sigh. He has to take a moment before he can return to the conversation. ]
no subject
Date: 2023-09-21 06:12 am (UTC)There is certainly room in the heart for softness, and I'd argue anyone can benefit from a pinch of it in the proper time and place, but... no, the true purpose of the heart is our passions. Love, hate - these are not frail things. They can be expressed softly, perhaps, but are far from soft themselves. Tch...
And where you keep repeating that the head is what matters, are you telling me that you're not trying to argue for cold logic at all times? Have we misunderstood each other on that front too? Or is that truly a point of disagreement?
no subject
Date: 2023-09-21 12:04 pm (UTC)[Javert's chatter picks up to a clip, his murmuring belying a great excitement -- or a great agitation. Yes, he had understood Bakura's heart as a soft feeling, tenderness, love. He laughed because of the apparent contradiction, because of how predictable Monsters can be, insisting on one thing and acting on another; that Bakura would bellow about love while tearing his skull asunder.
Cast in this new light, courtesy of Ring-Spirit, he looks upon it with fresh eyes, and gains a new understanding.]
But from Monsters, it is too much to expect that for us all. So I step in to redirect and to manage; I ask only that you are open to suggested projects, and to inform me personally of your operations, so we can assemble a grander picture when we place our work side by side. I want Bakura's ire, his brutality, his violence directed where it counts. Yours, too, for that matter. That is why I come to you now with this proposition. I see no incompatibility with using logic for steering the strategy, and the heart [Javert sneers, his dislike for the term evident,] for our decisive action.
Had Bakura approached me under different circumstances, as you are now, I would agree. So his heart impels him to hate me, very well. If he can manage that hatred, use it to our advantage, and redirect it to useful projects, that would be helpful, indeed.
no subject
Date: 2023-09-22 02:51 am (UTC)Logic does have its place as well, that I'll grant; certainly plans work out better with its use.
[ He lets out a discontented huff as he rearranges his thoughts now that their respective stances have been clarified, and considers things from this new angle. ]
Mn, we're not as wholly incompatible as I'd come here thinking. Annoying... tch.
Well, I can't speak for Ryou of course, but I'm amenable - and I suspect he'll at least be more open to the idea after I explain how we've been misinterpreting each other. Working more cooperatively would be of benefit to the Fog, for certain, and I know he'll see that much. I'll speak with him.
Is there more to discuss here, or did that cover it?
no subject
Date: 2023-09-22 12:52 pm (UTC)Nothing more at this moment. I will keep you abreast on special projects, when you begin to contribute your own, [Javert drawls.] But there is something else, regarding Bakura.
[He traces and teases at the upholstery as he speaks, keeping his hands busy to steady the mind.]
I don't want you to speak for him. You need not speak on my behalf, either. I told him plainly that when he is ready he may call upon me for a productive conversation, and I will leave off him otherwise.
But I also expect you will mince none of your thoughts if you choose to share this meeting of ours with him. I know you to be direct. It is a strength of yours.
Does this expectation sit well with you?
no subject
Date: 2023-09-26 04:15 am (UTC)I see. I do think he'd appreciate knowing what that laughing fit was actually about, whatever other decisions he may come to. I'll explain that much, leave any further decisions to him; sounds doable.
And I'll keep your little cooperation-plan in mind should any ~interesting~ thoughts strike me~.
[ With that he stands, ruffling and resettling his wings as he stretches slightly. ]
This was more productive than I'd anticipated.
[ If Javert has anything else to add, now's the time to speak up; otherwise the Ring-Spirit's heading out. He's not storming off angrily the way he'd arrived expecting to leave though - they seem to have actually accomplished something here. Amazing! ]
no subject
Date: 2023-09-26 05:00 pm (UTC)[Javert will treat himself to a nice cigarette this morning. His treat to himself for not flubbing up the meeting, like he did with Amanda.]
Mind the shards on your way out. And take care! I will be accessible through the usual routes, should you need me before I reach out again.
Until next time, Monsieur 'God King' Richard.
