who the fuc [ - wait. That username in combination with the context of the pharaoh...
For fuck's SAKE. ]
Marik?
Marik, you show up in my inbox calling yourself "hotrod" and expect me to value your taste in usernames?
[ The Ring-Spirit has no idea what the rest of the whining is about, but he's sure Marik will explain without need for prompting. ...Speaking of which, now that he knows who this is... ]
and what exactly were you trying to say about Ryou in that other message? include your current location with your response, as I may need to stab you with something.
I didn't pick this! The computer assigned it. I have a separate handle for Tåge business.
Also DON'T CHANGE THE SUBJECT. I'm trying to prep the Pharaoh to duel the Fog for our freedom in her weakened state, and besides, Ryou and I have made up. I've decided to forgive him for coming inside me.
Yeah, he could see it. They're not not each other's types - well, maybe. What is the pharaoh's type? What's he into besides simply "winning"? Besides ~defeating evil~? Uh... The Ring-Spirit frowns as he tries to focus on what he knows about the pharaoh as a person rather than the role and...
...and, uh.
The Ring-Spirit's opposite number himself doesn't waste much time on considering ~the pharaoh as a person~, does he. What does not!Adam, the person, want? Does not!Adam, the person, even know? Because the Ring-Spirit can see how he might not, and that's... what Marik means with the tunnel vision, isn't it.
...
Shit.
Among other things, the Ring-Spirit's previous "there's no time between rounds"-advice was perfectly misaimed for that kind of laser focus, he should have spelled out the necessity of SOME selfishness - gah! He's way too used to taking "I am GOING to be distracted by things as I see and decide I want them" for granted as a factor.
On another level, the Ring-Spirit is quietly, resignedly, disappointed in himself. He is invested in all the wrong directions. It's been ridiculous for a while now, he might as well just keep rolling with it at this point. ]
you have a plan for this that *doesn't* involve card games?
[ Because you ran a card game-mafia/cult, your last Big Plan involved playing card games, and don't think he didn't notice that your other current Big Plan ALSO involves playing a fucking card game - you're as bad as Seto Kaiba about this, Marik, ugh. ]
so in other words, your assistance with spreading truths about the Fog will help you defeat her (via pharaoh, via card game). that's what you just said.
it's not that I trusted you, but you're telegraphing worse than usual. been getting enough sleep?
My goal is to get home! Whether that's because the Pharaoh defeats her or she's thrilled I've conquered the peninsula in her name doesn't matter. I can't overlook a single possibility.
[ Can he say it. Can he say it, to the Ring-Spirit? He'll be opening himself up for vulnerability, but... the funny thing about this otherwise completely untrustworthy person is that he's already seen Marik at Marik's most vulnerable. And agreed to help anyway. Because it served his own purposes.
[ Oh, he wants to get home, does he? How completely novel, it's not like the Ring-Spirit himself isn't trying to get back to their world. Noooo, the game has changed entirely, because now Marik Ishtar is who wants the thing. ]
[ But Marik risks giving a reason for why he cares, beyond "I want it".
The Ring-Spirit can't help but compare their goals in going home. The Ring-Spirit intends to finish what he'd been interrupted in the middle of: opening the door to the Afterworld. Release the rest of his divine-self into the mortal realm, then tear his own self apart to give back the piece of himself that he carried - destroy the Ring-Spirit, discard the Thief-King, thus making whole the Great Evil God. Thus ensuring that the entirety of the world suffers just as much as Kul Elna, and for just as long.
When he gets home, Marik and his siblings will, all of them, be far worse off than simply dead.
then focus on what's truly separating us from home.
everyone says the Fog is what keeps us here, but that's only the truth insofar as she keeps us *in Ryslig*. what she's keeping us from isn't our homes, it's the Sea of Stars. she can pull us out of there, but none of us, not even her, have been able to pass *beyond* it. the Sea of Stars is the true obstacle. ask Noa for more detail.
I don't plan on staying here forever either. I've been working on it myself, but it's slow going.
[ If there was anything decent about him, he'd warn somebody "hey, when we're ready to go home, don't let me go with you" but, well. If he was anything decent they wouldn't need a warning like that, now would they. ]
[ A pause? Why a pause? ...Who can ever tell what this guy is thinking, though. He's got a track record of acting like a fool and then revealing a half-decent strategy.
So Marik will consider what the Ring-Spirit has to say. Ask Noa, huh. That can be arranged. Marik is so incredibly well-situated here, it's amazing. Yes, Ryslig clearly had just been waiting for Marik Ishtar to show up in order to be saved. He's got this. ]
Is Noa collaborating with you?
[ do you two have a plan
can he hear the plan
can he make fun of and then improve the plan
that is what you hired him to do
yes
.......shoot, though, the Fog's weakness isn't going to help in the long run then, huh. ONE CANNOT DUEL THE SEA OF STARS.
...and while he tries to surmount this Sea of Stars hurdle, here, have a nonsequitur that just popped into his mind on the topic of Noa. Obviously you need to hear everything he thinks it would be a good idea for you to do, as he ponders the ultimate goal, because all of his ideas are good ideas. ]
You should become a Fog Priest, too. It will increase your credibility.
damn right it would, because "Fog Priest" isn't a job, it's a powerset: a reward bestowed by the Fog herself. I can't simply "become a priest", I have to sufficiently impress her for it.
Then that's our next step. Growing our reach is a good start, but we'll need something flashy, too.
[ and this is where his plans start potentially conflicting, because he needs the Fog weak so Atem can duel her, but if they're going to impress the Fog, right now things that restore her power would be most effective...
But he shall thread this needle! He is certain! He PONDERS. ]
[It's done. Everything is settled. Ryou's been preserved well enough that Clint shouldn't figure out that there's a corpse in here, which would absolutely have been a problem if they'd tried to keep him there without mummifying him, or tried to sneak him in like oozy contrband around the start of the first October fog. The whole room's arranged, it smells nice, there's traps to protect him from any snoopy supers or hungry opportunists or anyone else who might get too curious, and now, all there is to do is wait.
Atem's seated in the living-room, in one of the chairs around the coffin-table, waiting for RS to finish putting the last touches on the defenses. He's not sure what you mean by "overkill," or how it might apply to this situation. He's going to take care of that body and make sure it revives somewhere that's familiar and not full of screams, fog, and cultists.
When the Ring-Spirit makes his way back down the hall to the common area, though, Atem speaks up.]
There's something you said earlier that I've been wondering about.
[ The Ring-Spirit is still going down a pair of mental checklists as he enters the living room, trying to ensure that he's both set up every trap to work the way he wants it to AND that he'll be able to disable them again quickly if necessary. ]
Yeah, and what's that?
[ Is there a couch he can sprawl across? If not, he'll just drop to the floor instead like a feathered Spolt. Important thing is being able to stretch out all his limbs, huge wingspan included. ]
You said that "bodies do weird shit if you check out," like bringing you into a chimney and out again with no memory of what happened before or after -- but that that only happened when there wasn't another person there to take the wheel. Is that really true?
And, if so...is it something that happens to Ryou?
[ The Ring-Spirit flops backwards - across the couch at an odd angle, long limbs (wings included) splayed out every which way. Atem gets an incredulous snort. ]
Push anyone far enough without giving a physical escape and they'll check out. That's just what happens.
Going somewhere with that, or was that your whole question?
[ The Ring-Spirit tiredly angles his neck to grace the pharaoh with a nice incredulous look too. He'd like to not move for a while, but seriously? Why is this a question? ]
I've never experienced anything like that. Even when...
[Spit it out. Don't get lost in it, just brush the surface, like leaning out a fast-moving river-boat and skimming your fingertips through the sun-warmed water. It's not the same as drowning, just don't fall in.]
...Daniel had me in and out of the bull, he was giving me something that made me forget. And when I woke up in Dyster in February, it was because I'd been drugged, too.
Yugi had blackouts like that. But only after he solved the puzzle, during the times when I'd taken over.
